Identify Symptoms Of Seasonal Affective Disorder

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Joann Grant Seasonal Affective Disorder is not an easy disorder to diagnose because most of the time it passes as light depression. However, if it is left untreated for a long duration, the possibility of its getting worse cannot be overruled. It may start off slow with the person feeling a little low during certain seasons but may grow gradually into a disabling disorder affecting ones normal life to a very large extent. It can throw ones life out of gear. Generally, those suffering from this disorder feel that what they are feeling is nothing more than helplessness of a temporary kind. Then, gradually it gets serious and the season starts making them increasingly depressed. It is only when the problem becomes unmanageable that the experts are approached. Many of the studies on the subject have shown that one out of every ten of us has suffered from the disorder in some form though it cannot be considered a disorder because it occurred once in a while. It becomes a disorder only when it starts affecting a person regularly and its impact disrupts ones normal life. The disorder is indicated by extreme sluggishness. So much so that people tend to sleep for more than 10 hours everyday, and even after that feel tired on getting up. It is true that the disorder can cause depression, but it is equally true that it might also be a contributing factor. Studies have shown that those who are suffering from depression of some kind are more susceptible to the disorder. The studies connect the disorder to lower exposure to the sun because a lack of sun makes the body to produce lesser amount of vitamin D, which can be a cause of the disorder. The disorder is found to affect people of all ages but is not found in young children and tends to dig its claws on women of above 35. If there are symptoms indicating Seasonal Affective Disorder, it is advisable that you seek expert assistance immediately because it can sometimes be cured simply by a making a little alteration in ones diet. The treatment for the disorder is relatively easy and quite effective. So, there is no point in continuing to suffer from it. Your Career - Have You Met A Roadblock?

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By Tony Jacowski Most of the time it is employees who feel stuck and cornered and their career not advancing as they would like it to. After putting in all the hard work and gaining experience and they thought everything was just right for their career to advance. Then they realize that something is amiss and they are stuck when the rest of the world is merrily marching ahead. But hold on a minute; before putting the blame on someone else, have you thought about what could have happened? Here are a few indicators that tell you if you have met a roadblock in your career path: 1. You are sailing along, making your superiors look good and making money for the company. And just when you thought you were about to get that promotion, you find someone new arising on the horizon and you suspect he is brought to stop you from getting the new position, or at worst, dislodge you from your job. 2. You are doing just fine and the company (your employer) has even promised you a bonus the next fiscal quarter. You discover, one fine day, that your company is finding it difficult to live up to their promises in the face of new competition and is, in fact, planning huge layoffs. 3. You realize, after putting in years of sweat and hard work, that your employer (a small cap company) is being more than conservative in this competitive world with no plans for expansion or technical upgrades to face challenges. The gains you made are withering away. If you stay in this place any longer, you face the danger of losing out completely. 4. You think, quite often, that there is too much work and you are unable to handle it as well as you would have liked. You want to demand/request more resources or manpower irrespective of whether the increased workload is illusionary or real. You think that adding a few more hands will ease the pressure but management is skeptical and denies your request. 5. You took a job with a small company, as you were in urgent need of earning an income. You had hoped to seek a better one as thing progressed. Now you find it hard to convince large companies of your abilities, as they look down upon you as a guy from a small company used to an alien work culture. 6. A sizeable number (59%) of employees dont think depression and illness is a roadblock to their career advancement. The situation is worse with female employees thinking (of course, not without truth) that sexism/harassment, pregnancy and childcare are their roadblocks (source: depression center, University of Michigan). There are many people who think, at times, that they are stuck at a roadblock concerning their career ambitions. Sports figures (remember Jennifer Capriati); politicians and business people, all find themselves in this similar, Catch-22, situation. They are often at a loss for ideas as to how to move forward. Knowing the early signs of career stagnation will put you on the track to career recovery. Tony Jacowski is a quality analyst for The MBA Journal. Key To Success

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By Sharon White There is a growing trend across Europe for university students to combine their courses with one of the European foreign languages. Among most popular choices are Spanish, German and Italian. Students are realizing that mastery of languages is a key to improving their career prospects, cross-border travel and better communication with fellow Europeans. Erasmus representative Anthony Smallwood says: The increase in the number of students wishing to study languages is apparent in the rise in Lingua and Erasmus grants currently in demand. In 1990-1991 Linguas first year of operation, 1,867 network students received Lingua Student mobility grants. There are now 8,847. a similar number of students have received a grant for Erasmus. More universities are offering courses with modern European Languages as a minor, says Smallwood. The upward trend is due in part to students realizing the importance of cross-cultural exchanges and the growing need to be able to communicate in a number of different languages. Johanna Wilson, a Scottish teacher of English living in France began studying German so that she could take part in a German exchange programme. I had stayed with a German family and worked as a chambermaid in a German hotel. I wanted to communicate with the people in German. I caught the bug realizing the importance of exchanging of breaking down the barriers. I ended up studying German for four more years, one and a half through Erasmus in Germany and two and a half at the University of Aberdeen in conjunction with my degree in modern history. Reiki Controversies - Many Paths to One Tradition

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Gail Juliano Dialogs about Reiki are good, and keep Reiki fresh and dynamic. About 10 years ago, I went through a very long time of disillusionment about Reiki, just as its founder, Mikao Usui did during his early days of healing and teaching using the Reiki energy. In the end, I was even more deeply committed to the Reiki energy than ever before. The stories, the histories, and the people were only part of the path that the Reiki energy itself used to come to us. I could see that the core energy was the important thing and always managed to come through, no matter the controversies and confusions. I was taught Reiki by two masters, one of whom was taught by two other masters, one with a “traditional” Alliance path, and one with a maverick path. My second Reiki Master was very non-traditional. His lineage was non-traditional from Takata forward. I studied for several years during the 90’s with two Reiki Alliance Masters. They were both beautiful women, and though I respected their traditional ways, in the end, took a less traditional Reiki path. I paid 10,000 units of energy for my Reiki Mastery, which I worked through with my master. I was very committed to my process, and to learning everything I could to enhance my abilities as a teacher. I understand the reasoning of paying $10,000 and respect those who go in that direction. I chose a different path, or could say rather, that it chose me. I do not charge that much for my mastery classes, but make it very clear to my students that for the energy to come through most clearly, it helps to give a lot of energy in exchange (at least, 10,000 units) if not directly to me, then to the universe in service or tithing, or some other way. The various opinions on which is the best way, or the purest way, or the right way, to do or experience Reiki is old patterning moving up and out. Ego will always play a part in everything we humans do. But, masters know that the intent of the distance symbol is to bring us to a higher place, if even for only a short time. We can meet the divinity in another from the highest place in us, and know their absolute perfection, humbly allowing whatever purpose the Reiki energy has brought us together for. I have always been taught, and believe, and do my best to pass on to my students, that it is not so much about “mastering” the energy, as learning to be “mastered” by it. The true teachers are not the ones in your lineage. They can pass on the energy to you, along with their interpretations about the energy, and the stories they have been told, but ONLY REIKI, itself, can actually teach you anything. It will take you where you need to go for your greatest and deepest healings. It is always there to help you respond to whatever arises. It will gently lead you to the truth of who you are, and if you resist, it will be there to comfort and guide you. It is a miracle that Reiki has come to us in any form… Those whose hands touched our crowns through attunements are blessed gifts, and are divine beings in their own rights. We are grateful, and pass it on, in as sacred a way as we know… visions of bubbles or not, $10,000 or not, weekend courses or not, published symbols or not. The Perfect Gift From Him to Her

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Fred Parker It’s always a problem finding a really special gift for your girlfriend ,partner or wife. Although you know her know her pretty well, it still seems that finding that special present with that extra “wow!” factor is just as elusive as ever. She loves scents and finds perfumes fascinating, but a trip to the department store for me was a terrifying thought. I’ve known about personal perfumes, it seems that all the celebrities have them these days, but the cost of the perfumer consultation and those daunting perfume counters just put me off. Trawling through the perfume sites and there are hundreds of them, there is one that allows you to design your own fragrance just by filling in my girl’s personality and life style details. The site creates a fragrance easily and inexpensively and it’s fun to do too. It is like so many things a computer program but it really is very easy to use and when you are done a description of the fragrance you have just designed is presented on the screen! There are plenty of sizes to choose from and the company will put her name on the bottle of her personal scent. Just as if that wasn’t enough they have a special section on their website so that her fragrance comes with the bottle labelled not just with her name, but her photo too! You can use a photo from your cell phone, a digital camera or a web cam is fine too. All the instructions are on the website and perfume orders are despatched from the UK in two working days to be delivered in the USA in just a week. I haven’t given it to her yet. I’m waiting for the right moment but I know she will be ecstatic with her present and I can’t wait to be well rewarded! Oh yes the name of the site, sorry I can t remember just Google in create fragrance and I am sure it will be there. Last time I looked I do remember it was number one! Weight Loss - The DEW Method - Part 1

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

By Simon Volk This is the first article in a three part series on using the DEW method of weight loss. Each article will focus on one letter in “DEW”. Today we will discuss the “D” which stands for diet. I started out with the “D” word, can you believe it? Of course you can, as any weight loss program has to take this into consideration. Here is the simple fact - you can not eat 5000 calories a day (or each meal for some of us) and expect to maintain or even loss weight. Unless, of course, you have a very physical job or run marathons every other day, then you might need the 5000 calories a day to fuel your body. A couple of common sense items is all for this area. You need to control the number of calories you take into your body. There are plenty of diet books and websites that will help you decide what is right for you, but somewhere around 2000/day seems to be the norm. It is different for men and women. Here is the key - whatever you decide is right for you spread them through out the day. If you try to “diet” and eat little or nothing for breakfast and lunch and then eat all you calories at dinner (followed by a late night snack - come on I do it too so let’s be honest). This pattern causes your body to go into survival mode due to the starvation the first half of the day and store most of the calories as fat when it finally does get feed to get it through the next morning. So find a way to spread your calories out over the day, small amounts ever couple of hours to keep the hunger away and feed your body as it needs it, not all at once. So I packed my desk at work with low calorie items (pretzels, granola, almonds, etc.) and between meals (10 am & 2 pm) I would snack a little to keep my metabolism up. And I had a snack again at night, it is important if you do this you give your body time to process those calories. Right before bed it not the right time. Try to make your final snack 2 - 3 hours before going to bed if possible. There are plenty of diets out there and even more information on “what” to eat. I will leave that for you to decide what works best for you. Again, my point is that when and how you eat is maybe more important than what you eat. This three part series is an expanded version of my original article The D.E.W method - how I lost 13 lbs. I hope this information has been helpful to you and check out part 2 when we discuss the “E” which stands for exercise. A final reminder, before starting any diet or exercise program consult with your physician to determine what is right for you. Good luck and good health. Relationship Advice - Warning Signs of an Emotional Affair

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Jeff Herring Affairs, including emotional affairs, are typicall unplanned events. Even when we are on that slippery slope, we convince ourselves everything in OK. “But we’re just friends” are four of the most dangerous words for your relationship and marriage. But over and over in my office and on the phone I hear it: “We are just friends, there is nothing going on.” The majority of extramarital affairs begin as “just friends.” While it is certainly true that there are affairs that begin with impulsive one-night stands with a stranger, the most common ones that I see begin as “just friends.” In fact, if you find yourself thinking or saying “but we are just friends” you are probably already in trouble. Gary Rosberg of America’s Family Coaches states that there are at least 19 stages a person will pass through on the way to physically consummating an extramarital affair. There are at least two important notions that we can lift from Rosberg’s statement: 1) At each and every one of the 19 steps, you have a clear choice between going further down or stopping the process. In other words, these things don’t “just happen.” 2) An affair - by the way, I hate that term! It makes it sound like it is this wonderful experience with no consequences … as in “It was a grand affair.” In my marital counseling and relationship coaching experience, adultery breaks up marriages, wrecks families and crushes kids. Anyway, now that my rant is over, an affair becomes adultery long before the physical act. In fact, emotional affairs can be stronger and more difficult to get out of than physical affairs. The late Shirly Glass was a pioneer in the area of emotional affairs. In her 2003 book “NOT Just Friends: Protect your relationship from infidelity and heal the trauma of betrayal,” Glass identifies three red flags that indicate that you have progressed from a safe friendship to a romantic emotional affair. 1) You feel closer to your friend than you do your spouse. You find yourself thinking of this person more and more often and looking forward to the next time you are together. When something happens during the day, the first person you think of telling is this friend, not your spouse. 2) Keeping secrets. You no longer feel comfortable telling your spouse about this person. You begin to cover up so as not to be found out. 3) An increasing sexual tension. You admit your attraction for each other, but promise (complain) that you can never act on it. You fantasize what it would be like to be with this person. This helps to create a pretend world where everything would be wonderful if the two of you could just be together. One of the most overlooked and dangerous facts about emotional affairs is that we are all vulnerable. If you believe that this fact does not apply to you, then you are even more vulnerable than everyone else. How to protect yourself and your relationship Keep clear boundaries. A boundary is simply what kids mean when they say “don’t go there.” Avoid being alone with and/or emotionally close to someone to whom you are attracted. Talk often about your spouse. “Spouse bashing” does not count. Talk about what you have done lately and what you are looking forward to with your spouse. If you are going to talk about emotional issues in your marriage, make sure you are talking to your spouse, a trusted friend who is on the side of you and your marriage or a professional who is on the side of your marriage. Be especially careful at work. More and more emotional affairs are occurring in the workplace. You spend time together, you go through crises together, you solve problems together. Do not make a habit of taking private lunches or breaks with the same person over and over. Set up a review committee in your mind. Ask yourself, “Would my wife, my mom, my wife’s mom, my sister approve of what I am doing right now?” or, “Would my husband, my dad, my husband’s dad, my brother approve of what I am doing right now?” If the answer is no, then I offer you what I call my RLH prescription. RHL stands for Run Like Hell! Here is a cold dose of reality: 75 percent of marriages between affair partners result in divorce. Not at all the result wanted at the beginning of an emotional affair. Student Housing - Look Further

Saturday, March 15th, 2008

By Ian Byrd Getting an apartment as a college student is one of the most difficult housing experiences you will go through. As a student, you are immediately judged as a risk. You don’t have a good job and probably only work part time since school is your focus. You carry the college student stigma, bringing to mind parties, late nights and loud music. Furthermore, there is intense competition for apartments near college since everyone moves in at the same time. Apartment owners whose complexes are near campus can be very selective since their facilities are in such demand. They can also charge higher prices and many will be willing to pay. So how can you possibly find a decent apartment near your college campus without getting gouged? The easiest way to find more affordable housing is to look a couple miles away from campus. Housing within walking distance comes with a premium. Once you get a few miles away, prices drop noticeably. What about parking and driving costs? If the weather allows, a bike costs almost nothing. Otherwise, carpool with your roommates. With either solution, the money you save on rent every month will quickly pay for a parking permit or a bike. You can also check out some alternative housing ideas. Although it may sound silly, trailer parks can offer great deals if you can get a hold of an RV for cheap. You can also look into renting a room from a family or even, perhaps with your parents’ help, buying a house in the area. Think of it as an early graduation gift. But if you’re really want that housing next to campus and your lack of income is a problem with the landlord, look to getting a cosigner. Your parents or one of your roommate’s parents can sign on, agreeing to make your rent if you fail to. Of course, if you really think you’ll have a problem making rent, you should be looking further away. It will certainly strain relations with your parents if they’re suddenly footing your rent. Before signing up with the high priced apartments near your college campus, be sure to check out housing options further away. You can easily bike a couple miles to save hundreds a month. A thorough investigation of you housing options will pay off big during your college years. Ian Byrd lived in student housing for 4 years and now runs websites dedicated to UCI and UCLA Housing. Beautiful Designs Found With A Quilting Template

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

By Michelle Bery Quilting is a long cherished skill that has passed down through families for generations. Grandmothers taught mothers who taught daughters the techniques required to produce beautifully crafted quilts that would be admired for years to come. Anyone who has quilted knows the inordinate amount of patience it takes to cut and compile the mosaic of patterns that together will make a stunning quilt. But the often overlooked fact of modern quilting is the quilting template, making the art of quilting much less difficult to master. A quilting template, as it name suggests, is a pre-made design that quilt makers can use to cut their fabric; it is generally made from a sturdy material such as acrylic, and allows quilters to cut many blocks of fabric at once, or one piece of fabric per design. A quilting template does much to improve consistency and elevate design, and has become more and more popular as a preferred quilting tool. Quilters can actually trace the design from the template onto their fabric, using a specially designed fabric pen, and then cut the design out of their fabric with quilting scissors. For novice quilters, the availability of a quilting template offers a chance to master the art of quilting without being totally left to their own devices. And for veteran quilters who are looking to upgrade or refresh some of their designs, a quilting template introduces a multitude of new ideas they may not have previously considered. One of the great benefits of the quilting template is its availability. A variety of templates can be found in any fabric store where you can look through books to find the perfect design for you needs. And the Internet has websites exclusively devoted to the quilting template where quilters can search through their inventory and order online. There are even sites that offer downloads of quilting templates that you can print straight from your home computer. Of course, the more creative among us can even create their own quilting template from something they draw freehand onto sturdy paper, transfer to plastic template material, and ultimately use to cut their fabric. The uses for a quilting template are endless and only limited by your imagination. Take the time to get creative and youll be surprised and undoubtedly thrilled with your results.
