The medical coder must stay current on any new ICD-9 code changes that would impact code accuracy and claims submission. HCPCS books contain the complete lists of HCPCS Level II codes with descriptions. They will guide the medical coder through current modifiers, code changes, additions and deletions. HIPAA books help to develop an effective HIPAA compliance plan and DRG books are needed for Medicare’s classification of inpatient hospital services based on principal diagnosis, secondary diagnosis, surgical procedures, age, sex, and presence of complications. Training Training of the medical billers and coders can range from two to four years of college, a technical school diploma, certificates from correspondence courses, to simple home study programs. Upon completion of such training many coders may seek professional certification. Though not necessary, it is recommended and national associations are available for the certification processes. By Rick Johnson Problems with staffing and retention may not be due to bad hires or a low unemployment rate. In fact, they may be related to poor management insight by not recognizing your employees as a core competency in your business strategy. Although employees may not fit the strictest definition of a core competency, it is a fact that your employees are the ones responsible for creating many of your core competencies. It is an undisputable fact that failure to recognize the importance of employee contributions will lead to failure regardless of your business strategy. Recruitment and Retention Creating a strategic plan and definitive initiatives is the easy part of the formula for success. The difficult part is finding, recruiting and retaining the appropriate talent combination in todays market to carry out that plan. Recruitment and retention are major issues in most industries today. These issues are especially critical to the wholesale distribution industry for two reasons: First, wholesale distribution is one of our aged-basic industries that doesnt necessarily project the excitement of the high-tech industries and the dot coms of the new millennium (even though many have crashed and burned). Second, the number of employees between the ages of 25 and 44, traditionally the bulk of the workforce, will continue to decline in the United States for at least the next five years. The baby-boomers are aging quickly toward retirement. Under these circumstances, how in the world does a company not only recruit new talent, but protect the talent they have? Questions about compensation, training, incentives, benefits and work environment always come to the forefront. The answer is committing to becoming an employer of choice (EOC) with as much tenacity as you commit to being a supplier of choice, always wanting the first call and last look. Pay Attention Many company executives pay far too little attention to this part of their businesses. Often the mindset is that this is the touchy-feely stuff thats a non-revenue producing necessary evil. Maybe that thought process didnt hurt the company in the 80s or early 90s when unemployment in some areas reached 10%, but thats not the case today where the labor unemployment rate in many markets is less than 4%. When unemployment is that low, most people who are unemployed just dont want to work. As a result, there is a lot of corporate raiding going on. Even with the recent massive layoff announcements by the automotive industry and some high-tech industries, unemployment remains at a level that just is not conducive to recruitment and retention. So whats the answer? Going on midnight raids? Offering BMWs as signing bonuses? Paying way above market wages? NO, the answer is building a human resource strategy into your business plan. Get over the old paradigm that human resource departments are too costly and of little value. In fact, those companies that adopt that philosophy actually spend more money by having highly compensated managers, particularly sales managers, running ads, receiving resumes and doing preliminary interviews when they should be selling. The costs associated with that process as well as the revenue lost due to extended position vacancies inevitably far exceeds the annual costs of dedicated human resource professionals. Secondly, a huge percentage of new hires will jump ship within 18 months if they sense the company is not committed to its employees. They will jump if the company does not accept them into the fold properly by offering initial orientation, subsequent training and a culture that treats the employee as ! the companys most precious assets. The question is not, Can you afford to invest in this soft touchy-feely stuff? The question becomes, Can you afford to not invest in your most important asset, your employees? The old paradigm creates a bias against paying attention to the human element of the workforce. Many company executives that do strategic business plans initiate from the top down instead of the bottom up often ignoring the real value of a strategic plan. The real value is the involvement and education of your employees in completing the plan, not in the document itself. Are you at the mercy of your workforce? This bias that exists in many companies is almost as though admitting that employees are the most precious of corporate assets will lead to an anarchy on which owners and managers will fall at the mercy of the workforce. Well, shake your head in disbelief if you want to, but the reality of the situation is that you are at the mercy of your workforce. The rules have to continue to change. If you arent willing to admit that and get your head in the game then you wont survive in the new millennium. People are not profits but without people there are no profits. Some companies recognized their dilemma years ago. Many of the top performers in your industry are at the top because they strive to be employers of choice. These are forward thinking companies that have found solutions to their recruitment and retention challenges. Following in their footsteps requires an initial gut check. Honestly ask yourself how your employees would answer questions like: Do you receive counseling on a career plan? Is there a current wage and salary plan in place? Do performance incentives exist? Do you receive regular training and instruction? Do you receive performance updates and recognition beyond a once a year chat with your boss? Does customer feedback play a role in performance evaluations? Are suggestions reviewed and awarded? Is there both a formal and informal communication channel? These questions relate to the basic core competencies of human resources: staffing, training, rewarding, recognizing and organizing. The business strategic plan cannot succeed without paying attention to this part of the business. You must facilitate your employees involvement and feedback into this process. This basic premise in implementation across steel service centers varies according to size. The same plan for a $20 million privately held company would not work for a $500 million private or public company.. By Valerie Giles Many of us garden just for the sheer joy of it. But did you know that all over the country the healing aspects of gardening are being used as therapy or as an adjunct to therapy? Although this might sound like a new concept, garden therapy has been around for decades. For example, the Garden Therapy Program at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, and in regional hospitals in Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Rome, Thomasville and Savannah, has been helping people for over 40 years through gardening activities known as social and therapeutic horticulture. So what exactly is social and therapeutic horticulture (or garden therapy)? Therapeutic horticulture is the process by which individuals may develop well-being using plans and horticulture. This is achieved by active or passive involvement. Although the physical benefits of garden therapy have not yet been fully realized through research, the overall benefits are almost overwhelming. For starters, gardening therapy programs result in increased elf-esteem and self-confidence for all participants. Social and therapeutic horticulture also develops social and work skills, literacy and numeric skills, an increased sense of general well-being and the opportunity for social interaction and the development of independence. In some instances it can also lead to employment or further training or education. Obviously different groups will achieve different results. Groups recovering from major illness or injury, those with physical disabilities, learning disabilities and mental health problems, older people, offenders and those who misuse drugs or alcohol, can all benefit from the therapeutic aspects of gardening as presented through specific therapy related programs. In most cases, those that experience the biggest impact are vulnerable or socially excluded individuals or groups, including the ill, the elderly, and those kept in secure locations, such as hospitals or prisons. One important benefit to using social and therapeutic horticulture is that traditional forms of communication arent always required. This is particularly important for stroke patients, car accident victims, those with cerebral palsy, aphasia or other illnesses or accidents that hinder verbal communication. By Rachel Starr Thomson It’s December. Sweet month of mistletoe, holly, and ivy: there are carols in the air, bells on the street corners, reindeer on the roof. Madison Avenue has kicked into high gear. Hollywood is busy making movies which blow the message on silver trumpets: Christmas is about family, Santa Claus, and Dr. Seuss. Every pastor in the nation is preaching a sermon from the first three chapters of the Book of Luke. Ten thousand families hang ten thousand decorations in ten thousand homes with ten thousand traditions. All of which begs the question: What, exactly, is Christmas all about? What comes to mind when you think of Christmas? Childhood memories. Sugar cookies. Sleigh rides and snowflakes and stockings by the fire. Presents. Family. Traditions. Silent Night. All wonderful things, all important things (some more important than others)but not one of the above answers the question. What is Christmas all about? Last night in church we sang “Angels We Have Heard On High” and I thought about the shepherds on that very first Christmas, so very many years ago: I thought how they saw and heard such a wonder, and yet, they didn’t fall into the trap we have fallen into. They did not go home and decorate angel trees; they didn’t make angel cookies and sing angel carols. They knew that Christmas wasn’t about angels. The angels knew it, toothey came for one reason, to point the hearts of men to a child in a manger. Christmas is about Christ. It is about that Eternal Child who still brings light into the darkest of nights (…beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations… The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined” Isa. 9:1-2.) I love the tinsel and trappings of Christmas. Really I do. But the minute they cause me to lose sight of the Lord I love, they have done me a great disservice. Up to this point, I am sure you all agree with me. But I don’t want to stop yet; this truth, that Christmas is not about trappings but about Christ, goes beyond the holidays into the whole way we live our lives. You see, just as Christmas so often swallows Christ, so religion has often swallowed Him. Too many times our religion has become a song in which the music drowns out the wordsa life that is all body and no heart. What is your faith all about? Try and talk to people about the Lord and you will find yourself talking about prophecies and healings, programs and events, preachers and singers and services and denominations and mission agencies and the Christian next door who just doesn’t understand Christianity. The fact is that God did not love the world so much that he sent First Baptist Church of Whereversville. He so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Nor is the message, Come unto the big Christian concert featuring sixteen Grammy award-winning singers and ye shall find rest. Jesus said, Come unto me, all ye that are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Religion, with its traditions and observances, is not wrong in and of itself. We need it to help us frame the truth, to help us understand that which is too high for us. We kneel because it reminds us to pray; we sing because the song makes us think of freedom and beauty, and the Lord of both; we light candles to remind us of the Spirit’s light inside of us. There is nothing wrong with any of this, until we stop using religion to lead us to Christ and start using it to lead us to itself. When the children of Israel sinned against God in the desert and were poisoned by snakes, God instructed Moses to fashion a bronze snake and attach it to a pole, and those who looked at it would be healed. This strange statue was a symbol of the coming Messiah (And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life John 3:14-15). The Israelites kept the serpent for many years, until the time of King Hezekiah. In those days, the people had turned from God and had started worshiping the serpent itselfturning a reminder of God’s grace into an idol. Hezekiah, in his zeal for the Lord, had the bronze snake destroyed. Throughout history this pattern has repeated itself. People look to religion instead of looking to God. Those of us who come from a Protestant tradition think back to the Catholic Church of the Dark Ages and shake our heads, but our religious trappings have every bit as much potential to lead us astrayif we place our faith in them and not in Jesus. History proves this to be true. Those whose faith is in Christ live in love; those whose faith is in religion must live in judgment over others, for how else can they justify themselves? My brothers and sisters, we must come back to the author and finisher of our faith, to our Messiah. We must fall at His feet and worship; we must walk in His footsteps. It is His voice we listen for. His character we pray for. His grace we live by. When you say the words I am a Christian, what do they mean? Take joy in the beauty of Christmas with all of its trappings, for they make children of us all. But do not allow the tinsel to outshine the child in a manger. When Christmas ends and a new year begins, do not scorn the established church and all it represents, but do not forget why we are heredo not forget Who we are here for. Christ must be all in all. Join in the angelic host and proclaim it: For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. By CD Mohatta So many times, you will hear from someone that they are so and so. They are from the xyz family. They would say. Their family is famous for this and this, they would add. Family and a strong sense of belonging to our last name is important to many of us. Even if someones great great grandfather/grandmother was distantly related to the monarch of that country or a very rich family, ages ago, one remembers that and recollects that fact with pride. Common blood stream coming down the ages makes a big difference to a lot of us. Leave aside common people, in this modern age, even kings and queens are decided by heredity and not by qualities. I will talk of an imaginary situation. Say, I have a cousin, who I meet once a year. And I have a friend, with whom I share all my successes and failures and meet at least once a week. If a quirk of fate is drowning both and I am given the choice of saving only one of them, whom shall I chose? My decision will be dependent on my sense of belonging to common family and the value I put to my friendship. This decision may be tough to make, but I will have to make it and live with it for the rest of my life. What would you do, if such a situation arises in your life? Is man a logical animal? Do we behave and act in ways that are governed by certain rules? No! We all have our own rules, and values. We all look at the same situation very differently. Our reactions are very different during the times, when it comes to crux issues. I have seen examples where, if the men of two families break their friendship, both the families follow. Everybody says bye to the other family, as if every other relationship of friendship that was shared amongst the members of both the families never mattered! It all depends on ones values. It also depends on the values of a nation. Citizens of a nation talk of the royal family in a hushed tone, watch over their every movement, look at all the pluses and minuses. Why? The smallest kid of the royal family becomes a celebrity right from the birth. Why? It all boils down to values. Before this discussion talks only about family, let us all remember that, for many of us friendships matter more than ties of blood. Qualities are more important than inheritance. For many of us the most important factor is the person and not any other tag attached with that person.
