Super Sizing: Money Shrinks While Waist Lines Grow

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Kathryn Martyn, M.NLP “Your Eyes are Bigger Than Your Stomach” “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach,” my mother said, which meant, “No, you can’t have a milk shake.” She didn’t think my 10-year old appetite was sufficient to finish all that food, and she was probably right. Her motivation had less to do with whether I’d eat it, and more to do with the cost of the meal. She hated the idea of wasting money if I left some food uneaten. I remember thinking, “Who cares if I don’t eat it all, I just want a milk shake!” Some of us still carry that thinking, “Wasted food is wasted money,” but consider the opposite. If you paid for it, whether you eat it now is irrelevant. Now you can spend the food how ever you please whether it be by eating some, giving some away or even tossing it in the garbage, it’s now yours. The food belongs to you. You do not have to eat it to get your money’s worth. Super Sizing is Costing you More than Extra Money Now restaurants encourage us to order the next size larger, by pricing the larger size only slightly higher than the regular. This appears to be a good value so why not go for it? Of course, if you get the bigger portion now you must “get your money’s worth” by eating it all, and that’s the problem. You are already receiving your money’s worth when you take possession of your order. Whether you eat it doesn’t make it a better value. Learning to throw away extra food is far better than eating it even though you’re no longer hungry out of some faulty reasoning about value. The main cost in a fast food meal for the producer is preparation, packaging and serving, not the food. It costs pennies for the syrup in your drink, but you pay over a dollar. A small order of fries costs nearly the same as a large for McDonalds to prepare consequently their profit margin is larger when they sell the larger size. Perhaps they give you a drink you didn’t want in your “value meal.” That’s not a good value if you wouldn’t have ordered it in the first place. Ordering the ultra huge super duper size costs the company a few more pennies and that’s why the pricing makes sense for the restaurant. Convince the public they are getting good value by offering bigger servings for only slightly more money, and they will most likely order the larger size, which is exactly what has occurred. The worst of it though is what all this super sizing has done to our bodies. We’re now a walking advertisement for super size America. Finally, consider the cost to your wallet of Super sizing: * 3 fast-food meals per week X .79 cents extra for the “Super Value Meal” = 2.37 dollars per week * 3 person family X 2.37 dollars = 7.11 dollars additional expense per week * 7.11 dollars X 52 weeks/Year = Over 369.72 dollars a year! That’s almost a dollar a day. Nearly 370 dollars per year extra expense just because of those three little words, “Super size it.” Think of what you could do with an extra 370 dollars every year. If you don’t want to give up your fast-food habit, at least cut back to ordering a regular sized meal and leave the super sizing for the big boys. Take a look at your regular eating and drinking habits, especially away from home, and see where you can make some changes that will both save you money, and help you lose some weight at the same time. Super sizing is only a good value for the food industry, not for you or your waistline. ~~ Kathryn Martyn, Master NLP Practitioner, EFT counselor, author of Changing Beliefs, Your First Step to Permanent Weight Loss, and owner of OneMoreBite-Weightloss.com lost 80 pounds over 17 years ago. Being Visible on a Budget

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Claire Cunningham Once upon a time a company introduced a new product. They didnt want their competition to know, so they didnt advertise or even send out a news release. Sales of the new product were disappointing. The manufacturer was unhappy. What went wrong? Any thoughts? My answer is that this kind of stealth marketing doesnt work. You need to be visible to sell something. When this manufacturer started promoting their new product, sales picked up. So visibility is good for business. But how do you get visible with limited resources? Here are some programs I recommend. 1) Postcard marketing - Use postcards to ask for referrals, announce events, build website traffic, say thanks, and more. Of course, for best results you need a good list. 2) News release program - Does your company bring new products or services to market? Publish literature? These are great subjects for news releases. Send releases to editors at relevant publications regularly to get more than your fair share of coverage. Public relations activities like this are time-intensive, but cost much less than advertising. 3) Feature coverage - Getting major coverage in the right media outlet can enhance visibility and credibility quickly. Use research and planning to ensure your topic is timely. Then target specific editors. 4) Case history articles - Highlight your company’s capabilities with problem/solution articles. Well-written case histories are in demand — by readers and editors alike. These stories make great website content, too. 5) Internet - Creating and maintaining a website is relatively low cost, especially compared to printed pieces like brochures. If you need to reach young adults, teens or business people, the Internet is where you need to be. E-mail marketing can be a good tool, too, but be sure to get the recipients permission. 6) Newsletters - Developing a good newsletter takes market intelligence and careful planning. Then you need discipline and skill to crank out something worthwhile on a schedule. But its worth it! A good newsletter can gain you loyalty, credibility, and oh yeah visibility. 7) Identity - Maintaining a consistent identity is a low-cost way to maximize impact. Consistency and professionalism help any business over time. Consistency means repetition. That’s what solidifies ideas in our brains. Professionalism is about looking good. If you want to be taken seriously, present a professional image. Whatever you do, repeat, repeat, repeat! A single mailing (for example) may get disappointing results. Dont be surprised or discouraged. Keep at it with a consistent look, message and audience, and over time your message will sink in. Copyright 2005 Clairvoyant Communications, Inc. Guide to Choosing a Juicer in the UK

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By John Jackson Choosing a juicer can be a very tough decision, considering the amount of products on the market. The information we provide you with here should arm you with enough knowledge to choose a juicer suitable for your individual needs. Firstly, the juicers on our website are selected on the basis of quality, ease of use and reliability and they are all serviced in the UK. All our juicers eject the pulp (fibres) separately to allow continuous juicing. We do not generally sell ‘high-street’ juicers, as the ones we have tested have been found to be of poor quality and difficult to clean. The motors and juicing parts tend not to be as refined as with the professional juicers which can lead to poor quality juice with lots of foam and a very wet pulp. These factors can often be enough to turn the user off juicing for good! There are different types of juicers often referred to as ‘centrifugal’, ‘masticating’ ‘twin gear’ and ‘citrus’ juicers. We will attempt to explain further the different types of juicers below but firstly, we will cover how juicing works. What is Juicing? Juicing is the separation of the juice and the fibre (pulp) from the produce being juiced. The juicing process breaks down the cells of the produce which releases the liquids in to one receptacle and the fibres are discarded in to a separate container. Why would we want to do this? Removing the fibre allows us to get at more of those essential nutrients contained in fruits and vegetables which would otherwise take a lot of chewing to eat, juice is also much easier for the body to absorb and digest. As we are now being encouraged to eat 5 different portions of fruit and vegetables per day - juicing is an excellent way to get these nutrients in to our bodies. The juicing process also discards the chemicals found in non-organic food into the pulp. The heating of food destroys a significant proportion of the vitamins, minerals and enzymes contained in it, it also changes the structure of the molecules - making it more difficult for the body to absorb and in turn less digestible. The use of natural ‘raw’ foods in treating cancer and other serious illnesses has proved successful where conventional modern medicine has failed. THERE ARE GENERALLY THREE CATEGORIES OF JUICES: GREEN JUICES: Green juices cleanse the body of pollutants and have a rejuvenating effect. Made from a variety of green vegetables, green juices are rich in chlorophyll, which helps to purify the blood, build red blood cells, detoxify and heal the body, and provide the body with fast energy. Green juices can be made with alfalfa sprouts, cabbage, kale, dandelion greens, spinach, and other green vegetables, including wheatgrass. To sweeten and dilute your green juices, try adding fresh carrot and apple juice. Although green juices have great health benefits, they should be consumed in moderation. Try drinking about 8 to 10 ounces a day. VEGETABLE JUICES: Fresh vegetable juices are restorers and builders. They boost the immune system, remove acid wastes, and balance the metabolism. They also aid in the control of obesity by removing excess body fat. Among the most healthful and delicious of the vegetable juices are beet, cabbage, carrot, celery, cucumber, kale, parsley, turnip, spinach, watercress, and wheatgrass juice. Carrot juice is probably the most popular of the juices and is packed with beta-carotene, the vitamin A precursor that helps fight cancer. Because carrots are the sweetest of the vegetables, their juice is not just delicious on its own, but is great for mixing with other vegetables to increase their appeal. On the other hand, strong-flavoured vegetables - broccoli, celery, onions, parsley, rutabaga, and turnips, for instance - should be used in small amounts only. Garlic is also a great addition to vegetable drinks in small amounts. For the greatest health benefits, use many different vegetables when making your juices. That way, you will provide your body with a variety of important nutrients. FRUIT JUICES: Fruit juices help to cleanse the body and nourish it with important nutrients, including cancer fighting antioxidants. Although any fruit can be used, certain juices are particularly healthful and delicious. One favourite cleansing juice is watermelon. To make this refreshing drink, place a whole piece of watermelon - with rind intact - in the juicer. Other delicious juices can be made with apples, berries, citrus fruits, kiwi, melons, pears - or just about any fruit that you want to use. You can enjoy fruit juices at any time of the day. About 10 to 12 ounces per day is recommended. Types of Juicer We will now explain the different types of juicers and their particular advantages and disadvantages. Centrifugal (high-speed) Juicers These type of juicers work by centrifugal force (pretty much like a Tornado), the produced is pushed down on to a grater which is revolving at approximately 10,000 Revolutions Per Minute (RPM). The speed of the grater effectively shreds the produce and the centrifugal force created underneath - sucks the liquid through which is dispensed into a receptacle. The fibres are flung upwards and are discarded into a separate container. Advantages: These juicers are generally very easy to use and are quick at producing juice. The juice quality is very good. We have tested the majority of centrifugal juicers on the market and have found that the L’Equip 110.5 ‘Mini’ juicer is the best of the bunch by far. A good entry-level choice of juicer to start with if you are not sure that you will use it on a regular basis. Disadvantages: Centrifugal juicers introduce oxygen and heat into the juicing process which reduces the shelf-life. Juice produced from these types of juicers should be drank immediately to prevent any further loss in nutritional value, therefore it cannot be stored. This juicing process is not as effective when juicing leafy produce and therefore they are not recommended for juicing wheatgrass and other leafy greens such as spinach. This type of produce can be successfully fed through by screwing it up in to a ball and feeding through between firmer produce but the yield is nowhere near as good as with ‘masticating’ and ‘twin gear’ juicers. Also, the pulp will be wetter than that from the other types of extraction process. They can be slightly noisy due to the high-speed motor. Whole Fruit Centrifugal Juicers More and more of these juicers are appearing on the market now and while the benefits of not having to chop up the produce before feeding through the machine seems great at first - the downsides can outweigh the good. Firstly, the extra power needed to juice whole fruit increases three-fold over the L’Equip 110.5, so the extra frictional heat that is created can further destroys the enzymes and the amount of foam produced is considerably more! This extra power can also result in the machine sounding like a jet engine taking off and some of our customers have reported concerns about the effect on their hearing! Secondly, once you have done a fair bit of chopping up of produce - you’ll be surprised what you find inside. Grubs and decay can be found in even the most okay looking produce - do you really want to contaminate what you are drinking with this? If your requirements still point to a Whole Fruit juicer, consider the Easy Health Cyclone as it utilises far less power than some of the high-street versions. Masticating Juicers These type of juicers utilise a slow speed extraction process of between 80 RPM and 100 RPM (depending on the juicer) to prevent heat and oxygen affecting the juice. There are different types of ‘masticating’ juicers with different processes with the most common being the ’single auger’ process. Single Auger Juicers The produce is pushed on to a large, slow turning screw (the auger) which crushes the fruit and vegetables against a cone shaped sieve (the juicing screen) which separates the juice from the pulp. The auger contains tiny grooves which direct the produce along the juicing screen. Juicers in this category include the manual Z-Star, the budget electric Live Enzyme juicer and the motorised L’Equip Visor 509 and the Matstone 6 in 1 juicers. Single auger juicers are able to juice wheatgrass and produce an excellent yield, they are also whisper quiet in operation. Advantages: Excellent quality juice as it has not been affected by frictional heat. This allows certain juices to be stored for up to 48 hours in a refrigerator with minimal loss of nutritional value. They come with extra attachments for making noodles and pasta and also a separate screen for making smoothies, purees, salsas, peanut butter and even truffles. Juice can be made in batches, stored in an airtight container and taken to work or school - you are not tied to only drinking juice when you’re at home. Juice can also be frozen with minimal loss of nutrients, so its a good way to utilise all the produce that usually gets thrown away. Disadvantages: It’s a slow process compared to a centrifugal juicer, the obvious difference is in the RPM (100 compared to 10,000). Also, the produce needs to be chopped smaller to fit the feed chute (usually 38mm). Unfortunately, the slow speed is the price you have to pay to get the best quality juice. Single Cutter Juicer The Champion juicer, the original and only true ‘masticating’ juicer has been around for 50 years. It utilises a cutter that has tiny teeth running along it which shreds and chews the produce. It operates at just over 1,000 RPM and is a commercial grade juicer which you will find in bars and restaurants around the country. This is one of our best-selling juicers due to the fact that its extremely well built and therefore should last a life-time. Advantages: Especially good at chewing through harder produce like carrots and apples. Includes an extra screen for making smoothies, purees, salsas, peanut butter and even truffles. An ‘optional’ screen for juicing soft fruits can be purchased from us separately and there is also a Grain Mill for milling your own flour and grinding coffee. This is an extremely robust machine. Its commercial capability means that it can be run for longer than other domestic models without giving it a breather. It also has a feed chute of 45mm which is the biggest in the professional range. Disadvantages: Leafy greens have to be passed through in small amounts with harder produce. When juicing larger volumes of fibrous vegetables and greens, there can be a slight increase in temperature of the juice from friction. Refrigerating produce prior to use does alleviate this. However, providing you are happy to juice any greens with plenty of carrot and apple, this should never happen. The Champion is not suitable for juicing wheatgrass. Twin Gear (Triturating) Juicers The most affective juicers out there. They utilise two stainless steel cylindrical gears that sit side by side. The produce is drawn in and effectively pulverised by the gears. This process produces the best quality juice and the highest yield of all the juicers. We always recommend these juicers first if your budget allows. Different models have their own unique selling points but our first recommendations are the Twin Health Living, Green Power Kempo, The ‘Angelia’ Live Enzyme Pro and the Green Star range. Advantages: The best quality juice you are going to get with the longest shelf-life. Although these type of juicers cost significantly more than the others, the savings made due to the gain in yield and nutritional value will pay for itself in the long-term. They come with separate screens for juicing different produce and the build quality is excellent. Excellent at all leafy greens and wheatgrass. Disadvantages: Depending on the machine, these are the slowest of the juicers. All juicers struggle with soft fruits like oranges, strawberry, kiwi etc compared to with harder fruit and vegetables as the pulp is much stickier which sometimes causes blockages, also the yield from these fruits isn’t as good, The following juicers have a separate screen included or that can be purchased separately for juicing soft fruits. The Champion Juicer, Green Power Kempo, Twin Health Living and the Green Star juicers. Citrus Juicers These machines are dedicated to juicing oranges, grapefruit, pomegranate and other citrus fruit and therefore produce a better yield than using one of the conventional juicers above. They are motorised version of the old reamer style and can be manually or automatically operated by the user, good models are the Citri-Star and the Remida range. There are also Citrus Presses which require the user to pull down on a lever which juices the half orange, we recommend the X-Lever citrus press. Happy Juicing! Powerful Antibiotics Can Be an Overkill

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Tim_Napper] Tim Napper The literal definition of antibiotics is anti-life, and they effectively do what they were designed to do: destroy pathogenic life, which they do very well. The problem is, they don’t stop by eliminating the bad bacteria; they indiscriminately kill good and bad bacteria. Occasionally a person’s condition may warrant the use of powerful antibiotics, in order to give them brief relief from a disease process and give them an opportunity to rebuild their immune system. All too often, the use of these antibiotic “big guns” results in overkill, leaving the patient in a weakened condition. Antibiotic use, of course, is only one of the hazards of living in a modern world made increasingly hazardous by pesticides, herbicides and industrial pollutants that poison our air, food, water and dwellings. Few people living in modern cultures have escaped the use of antibiotics. Just as toxic chemicals are destroying the world’s ecosystems, antibiotics are systematically damaging human ecosystems. Infants and children are often given anti-pathogens and many of these young bodies may suffer antibiotic damage throughout their lifetimes. Only persistent and effective use of lactic acid producing probiotics can help normalize their intestinal tracts. Antibiotics have been designed to kill, and thus can rightly be called killer molecules. With practically every person in the world being bombarded with various kinds of killer molecules and pollutants, civilization is confronted with the serious threat of biological extinction. For example: Crops are being treated with pesticides, which are killer molecules.Insecticides are killer molecules.Industrial pollutants of our air, soil and water are destroying our metabolic detoxification systems. Our foods are undergoing genetic modifications and irradiation. As a direct result of the indiscriminate use of chemicals in our foods and medicines, we are facing a growing health crisis. Increasing numbers of health professionals believe one primary cause is the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. In fact, “Medical experts believe,” writes Prof. Rochlitz in [http://www.amazon.com/Allergies-Candida-Physicists-Rapid-Solution/dp/0945262213] Allergies and Candida, (page 72) “that over 2/3 of the population of the U.S. is presently suffering from chronic Candida.” The leading cause is thought to be antibiotics. Sometimes, just one episode of taking antibiotics initiates a life-time of unfolding misery!? While it is true that antibiotics will kill bacteria that may be harming you, they will also kill the friendly flora (bacteria) that live in your intestines. However, probiotics, consisting of ‘friendly’ bacteria, such as lactic-acid type strains of acidophilus, compete with any intestinal fungus and other germs and are able to curb or prevent their overgrowth. Criminal Files — Recording Those Who Have Broken the Law

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Amit Mehta Criminal files are the records of any criminal activity that someone has engaged in and may have been prosecuted or convicted for. Since criminal records are considered public records, these are readily available to people who wish to conduct background checks for one reason or the other. Criminal documents, compared to civil court files, definitely bear more weight when it comes to the assessment of an individual and his or her character. If you have been convicted before, you may want to access your own criminal files before a potential business partner or employer gets to them. It is best to come prepared by familiarizing yourself with the contents of the criminal file and work on having them permanently closed, especially if charges have been dropped or dismissed. You need to file a formal request for the closure of criminal files at least one month after they have been made, but even then, only the fingerprints, photographs and sections of the file will be destroyed. An occurrence report of criminal records is typically maintained by the registrar or by the county court even after closure for record keeping purposes. Online Access to Criminal Records Evaluating the Pros and Cons Quite a number of companies are now offering access to criminal documents online, giving the general public a comprehensive search of different kinds of criminal files. These include federal fugitive files, probation records, prison parole files and searches that include both state and county repositories for criminal records. Remote access to criminal files allows you to retrieve the information by demand, whenever the situation calls for it. Employers will be able to make quick hiring decisions and businesses will be able to decide on partnerships and joint ventures without doubting the credibility of their associates. There are disadvantages though. Cases of identity theft can proliferate and some people may use the information obtained through criminal files for blackmail or other unscrupulous reasons. The contents of these documents may also be used in influencing decisions of defendants and witnesses in ongoing criminal proceedings. While knowledge is control, it is the responsibility of your state to ensure that criminal files are accessed for the primary intent of protecting its citizens. They need to make sure that sealed documents remain confidential except in situations where it is justified that they are released. Pretrial and pre-sentence investigations are also to be withheld from the public until they have progressed to actual legal proceedings. But the disadvantages that remote access may bring about are still outweighed by the advantages. Tracking cases become easier since even judges and lawyers can access these criminal records online and the clerk’s office is freed from the burden of numerous requests. If there are any mistakes in criminal files, it becomes much easier to know about them and correct them accordingly. Even wrongful prosecutions and cases involving bribery and favoritism can be tracked using remote access to criminal files. Finally, this reinforces the open nature of public records and the legal system by allowing access to criminal files on the Internet. Want to Know the Top Sites to Find Criminal Files? Cell Phone in Every Pocket

Wednesday, August 22nd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Roberto_Sedycias]Roberto Sedycias Cell phones (telefone celular) or mobile phones have had a great impact on the way we lead our lives. In todays world, where change is the only constant, cell phones have been upgraded with lots of new technological features. There has been a tremendous growth in the use of cell phones all over the world and now almost anybody has a personal cell phone. What started in 1960s as a bulky radio communication equipment to be used at the time of war, it has now become a small pocket device with a host of special features specially crafted for the common consumer. It satisfies more than the basic need to communicate. It is a fashion statement an identity of self and it comes in hundreds of models. Nokia is the worlds largest manufacturer of cell phones followed by Motorola, Samsung, BenQ, Siemens, Panasonic, Philips, LG, NEC, Sony Ericsson, Fujitsu and many more. Apart from calling and texting, cell phones are used for a variety of purposes to keep contact information, to make task lists and daily schedules, browse mobile websites and check emails, play games, watch video clips, listen to music, take pictures and much more. Also cell phones (telefone celular) are easy to integrate with other electronic devices such as notebooks, music systems and etc. With the availability of infrared and Bluetooth technology, a lot of wireless connectivity is possible, such as the use of wireless headphones. Also you can make your phone interact with your notebook without any physical connection. So, what should you look for while purchasing a new cell phone (telefone celular)? The points to consider include the service plan, price, size, weight, features and technical specifications, compatibility with other devices, display screen resolution and a very important feature: battery life. The latest features offered by cell phones are mega pixel camera, wireless connectivity, modem capability, PC synchronization, music and video player and a lot more. Today, you can access the World Wide Web through your cell phone (telefone celular). To access internet, your cell phone has to be WAP-enabled. Many companies have created mobile compatible websites that make browsing on your phone very easy. You can get the latest news, stock quotes and game scores on the move through your cell phone. The advanced third-generation phones (3G phones) will soon storm the market and will have high-end graphical display that will enable better video conferencing and gaming experience. Everybody must follow basic cell phone (telefone celular) etiquettes. Your mobile should not ring in public and disturb others. Sometimes mobile phones ring at odd instances like in movie theatres, weddings, funerals, important official meetings, etc., and to top it the fancy ring tones disturb everybody else around you. You should keep your cell phone in the silent mode when you are at a public place and you must never talk on the cell phone while driving. This might put you in trouble in many countries as there are heavy fines on cell phone misuse. Cell phones (telefone celular) have become an intrinsic part of our lives that most of us cannot imagine a single day without it. Ring tones, caller tunes, mobile gaming, camera, texting, MMS and video messaging, audio and video recording and viewing are still not enough. New technologies are developed often to reduce size and weight, increase speed, provide a better user interface, to pack more high-definition features into a small pocket device. With GPS (global positioning system) capability, cell phones have become so useful that a person carrying one could be located to a range of a few meters, anywhere on the globe! GPS cell phones are important devices in locating users in emergency situations, which allows emergency services to be quickly dispatched. Using A Loan Calculator For Comparison

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Arseniy_Olevskiy]Arseniy Olevskiy A loan calculator is a tool that provides you with information about your loan before you sign for the purchase of it. It will determine many aspects of your loan to allow you to see what it will cost you. It will tell you the monthly payment of the loan that you are likely to have to pay as well as the total cost of interest and of the entire loan once it is paid off completely. It is a tool that you will want to use not only to know this but to help you to determine which loan product you should go with as well. You can use it to compare financing options that are offered to you to find out who will save you the most money. To use a loan calculator , you will need to input much of the information that you know about your potential loan. You will tell it how much money you are borrowing. You will tell it the interest rate that you have been quoted for the loan. (If you are not sure, get a few instant, online no obligation quotes so that you can compare them.) And, it will require that you enter the terms (or length) of repayment of the total cost of the loan. With that said, you will be able to get a good deal of information. One of the key things that you will learn about the financing from the loan calculator is the monthly payment that you will pay on the loan if you take it out. This is the most crucial part to the loan for most individuals. If you can not make this payment, you will not be able to get the loan. Now, use can use the calculator to help you here, though. If the monthly payment is too high, you can go back to the calculator and compare a loan that offers longer terms. By stretching out the time that you will pay for the loan, you will pay less. You can also look for lower interest rates on the financing as well and then use the calculator to help you. If you are looking to find the least expensive loan for your needs, you can use the loan calculator to help you to determine how much you can shorten the terms, which would reduce the total cost considerably and still make your monthly payment. Value Oriented Education

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Naraginti Reddy There is a profound Indian view about teaching which declares that the first principle of teaching is that nothing can be taught. This paradoxical statement may seem at first sight incomprehensible. But when we look closely into it, we find that it contains a significant guideline regarding the methodology of teaching. It does not prohibit teaching, since it is stated to be the first principle of teaching. It does, however, suggest that the methods of teaching should be such that the learner is enabled to discover by means by his own growth and development all that is intended to be learnt. It points out, in other words, that the role of the teacher should be more of a helper and a guide rather than that of an instructor. This would also mean that the teacher should not impose his views on the learner, but he should evoke within the learner the aspiration to learn and to find -out the truth by his own free exercise of faculties. The truth behind this role of the teacher is brought out by the contention that nothing can be taught to the mind which is not already concealed as potential knowledge in the inmost being of the learner. One is reminded of the Socratic view that knowledge is innate in our being but it is hidden. Socrates demonstrates in the Platonic dialogue, ‘Meno’, how a good teacher can, without teaching, but by asking suitable questions, bring out to the surface the true knowledge which is already unconsciously present in the learner. As we know, Socrates and Plato distinguished between opinions, on the one hand, and knowledge, on the other. They point out that whereas opinions can be formed on the basis of questionable sense-experiences, knowledge which consists of pure ideas is independent of sense-experience and can be gained by some kind of experience which is akin to remembrance. In other words, according to Socrates and Plato, knowledge is”remembered” by a process of uncovering. Again, according to Socrates and Plato, virtue is knowledge. Therefore, what is true of knowledge is also true of virtue. just as knowledge cannot be taught but can only be uncovered even so virtue, too, cannot be taught but can be uncovered. But, here again it does not mean that there is no such thing as teaching or that the teacher has no role to play. It only means that the teacher has to be cognizant of the fact the learner has in him a potentiality and that his role consists of a delicate and skilful operation of uncovering what is hidden or latent in the learner. There is, indeed, an opposite view, which is advocated mainly by behaviourists, who maintain that the learner has no hidden potentialities except some rudimentary capacities of reflex responses and that anything and everything can be taught to the learner by suit- able processes of conditioning which can be designed According to the goals in view. Thus Watson claimed that learners can be trained to become whatever you design them to become. According to this view, everything can be taught, all virtues and values can be taught and cultivated by suitable methods of conditioning. It is not our purpose to enter into a debate with behaviourism. But it is a fact that even behaviourism acknowledges that conditioning presupposes innate reflexes, and that the process of conditioning is dependent upon a reward-punishment system which, whether acknowledged or not, can be explained only if the learner has within him an innate drive towards some kind of goal seeking and fulfilment. In other words, even if we admit that external stimulation and conditioning are effective instruments of learning, it does not mean that stimulation and conditioning could work upon a subject that would be devoid of an innate capacity or drive to respond. Moreover, the claims of behaviourism have been questioned by several rival theories of psychology. The school of mathematical logic, for example, rejects behaviourism and prescribes that the aim in teaching should be more limited and that the claims as to what can be taught should be more modest. It maintains that the aim of teaching should be to teach procedures and not solutions and that the methods should be so employed that the mental processes are taken in the direction of mathematical logic. The Gestalt psychology maintains that there are in the learner basic perceptual structures and schemes of behaviour which constitute some kind of basic unity. It underlines, therefore, the presence of an innate intuition in the learner and it prescribes intuitive methods based on perception, which are found largely in audio-visual pedagogy. Psychoanalysis has discovered an unimaginable large field of innate drives of which our active consciousness is normally unconscious. But Freudian form of psychoanalysis, which posited eros and than as the two ultimate but conflicting innate drives in man, has been largely over-passed by Adler, Jung and others. Modern psychic research is discovering in the sub-conscious a deeper layer which can properly be termed as subliminal, since it is found to be the seat of innate capacities of telepathy, clairvoyance, etc. As psychology is advancing, we seem to be discovering more and more of what is innate in the learner. At the same time, we, are becoming more and more conscious of the necessity to be increasingly vigilant about the methods which we should employ in dealing with the learner. It is, however, sometimes argued that there is a valid distinction between knowledge and values and that while knowledge can be taught values cannot be taught. But when we examine this view more closely,we find that what is meant is that the methods which are valid and appropriate in the field of learning in regard to knowledge are not applicable to the field of learning in regard to values. We may readily accept this contention, and we may insist on the necessity of recognising the fact that corresponding to each domain of learning there are valid and appropriate methods and that the effectivity of learning will depend upon an ever-vigilant discovery of more and more appropriate methods in each domain of learning. It is clear, for example, that while philosophy can be learnt by a process of discussion, swimming cannot be learnt by discussion. In order to learn to swim one has to plunge into water and swim. Similarly, the methods of learning music or painting have to be quite different from those by which we learn mathematics or physics. And indeed, when we come to the realm of values, we must recognise the necessity of a greater scruple in prescribing the methods which can be considered to be distinctively appropriate to this field. One speciality of the domain of values is that it is more centrally related to volition and affection, rather than to cognition. And yet, cognition too plays a great role in the training of volition and affection. This point needs to be underlined because of two reasons. Firstly, it is sometimes assumed that value-oriented education should be exclusively or more or less exclusively limited to certain prescribed acts of volition and that the value-oriented learning should be judged by what a learner ‘does’ rather than what he knows. In our view, this is too simplistic and exclusive, and we should avoid, the rigidity that flows from this kind of gross exclusivism. Secondly, and this is an opposite, view-it is sometimes argued that learning is primarily a cognitive process and, therefore, value-orientation learning should largely or preponderantly be limited to those methods which are appropriate to cognition. In our view this, too, is a gross exclusivism which should be avoided. We recommend, therefore, that while methods appropriate to, volition and affection should be more preponderant, methods appropriate to cognition also should have a legitimate and even an indispensable place. This is reinforced by the fact that the striving towards values stirs up the totality of the being and cognition no less than volition and affection is or can be stimulated to its highest maximum degree, provided that the value-oriented learning is allowed its natural fullness. Instruction, example and influence are the three instruments of teaching. However, in our present system of education, instruction plays an overwhelmingly important role, and often when we think of teaching we think only of instruction. It is this illegitimate identification that causes much confusion and avoidable controversies. If we examine the matter carefully, we shall find that in an ideal system of teaching, instruction should play a much less important role than example and influence of the teacher. It is true that in the domain of learning where cognitive activities play a more dominant part, instruction through lectures and discussions may have, under certain circumstances, a larger role. But in those domains of learning where volitional and affective activities play a larger part, instruction through methods other than lectures and discussions should play a larger role. In a system of education, where teaching and instruction are almost identified, there is very little flexibility where example and influence can play their legitimate role. Moreover, our present system is a continuous series of instruction punctuated by home-work and tests which accentuate the rigidity of procedure and mechanical adherence to schedule of time-table syllabi and examinations. In this rigid and mechanical structure, the centre of attention is not the child but the book, the teacher and the syllabus. The methods which are most conducive to the development of the personality of the child such as the methods of self-learning, exercise of free will, individualised pace of progress, etc., do not have even an elbow room. Indeed, if this is the system of education and if we are to remain content with this system of education, most important elements of learning will for ever remain outside this system, and we cannot confidently recommend any effective system of learning, much less any effective programme of value-education. We envisage, however, that sooner rather than later, our system of education will change in the right direction. We believe that an increasing number of educationalists and teachers will come forward to break the rigidities of our educational system. We think that it is possible to make our system more and more flexible. And we maintain that with the right type of training imparted to teachers, a more healthy system of education will eventually be introduced and will become effective. While on this subject, we would like to make comment on our present system of examinations. Apart from a number of undesirable aspects of our examination system, the one which is particularly conducive to what may be called “anti-value” is the tendency which promotes the idea that passing of an examination and earning of degree is the aim of education. We recommend that radical measures should be adopted to combat this idea and to introduce such changes in our examination system whereby the educational process can remain unalterably fixed on the right aims of education. We recommend a radical change in the examination system as a necessary condition of any meaningful value-oriented education. It is sometimes argued that values can best be taught through the instrumentality of a number of subjects rather than through any specific or special subject, whether we may call it by the name of “moral education” or “ethics”, or “value-education”. We feel that there is a great force behind this contention and we readily recommend that a well-conceived programme of studies of various subjects naturally provide, both in their content and thrust, the requisite materials for value-education. The question, however, is whether our current programmes of studies have been so carefully devised as to emphasise those aspects which can readily provide to teachers and students the required opportunities, conditions and materials for value- education. We feel that much work remains to be done before we can give a confident answer in the affirmative. But even if our programmes of studies are revised, there will still remain the specific area of value education which, in our view, should receive a special, although not exclusive, attention and treatment. In other words, we feel that there should be in the totality of educational programmes a core programme of value-education. This core programme should be so carefully devised that various threads of this programme are woven into the complex totality of all the other programmes of studies. And yet, the central theme of value education would not form a mere appendage of all other subjects but would stand out as the over-arching and the supervening subject of basic importance. We further recommend that a suitable study of this core programme should form an important part of teachers’ training programmes in our country. Also, custom-made lenses are usually painted to order, so you would need to order them several weeks in advance. How to care for your Halloween costume lenses Caring for your Halloween costume contacts is quite simple - all you need is a no-rub multipurpose solution, a pair of plastic tweezers and a contact lens case. You can get it all from any chemist shop. There is no special solution for costume contact lenses so you can use any multipurpose solution - only make sure its marked for soft contact lenses. If you have several pairs of scary contacts, each should live in its own case. Step by step care for costume lenses: always wash your hands with soap before handling contact lensespick up the lens gently with tweezers (be careful not to tear it), place it on your fingertip and rinse it with a no-rub contact lens solutionnow it is ready to put in your eyeafter taking your costume lenses out, give them another rinse and place them in their case with fresh solution, until the next time you use them. If you are not planning to wear your lenses for several weeks, it is recommended that you change the solution and rinse them once a week. If you forgot to do so and your lenses spent a few weeks in their case unattended, give them a double rinse and place them in fresh solution for at least a couple hours before wearing them. For people who wear corrective or color contact lenses every day, costume lenses will feel pretty much the same as usual. If you never wore contact lenses before, at first you might feel a slight discomfort and an urge to rub your eye. One suggestion is to use lubricant drops, which you can buy from any chemist shop. Also, start wearing your lenses a few days before the party - a couple of hours the first day, 3-4 hours the second day, and so on. By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mary_Jones]Mary Jones Getting a loan is not a tough task today. You will be offered with numerous amounts of lenders. But the uniqueness lies in getting a loan which offers you the best loan amount at a very low interest rate. Low interest rate doesnt mean that the loan will have other charges with strict repayments. A low interest loan is a good deal only when all the other aspects of the loan are also favourable to you. Finding this kind of loan is a very difficult task. To make your task easier and help you find a low rate loan, read the following points. When looking for low rate loans, there are several points that you should keep in mind. The first thing is the interest rate. Keep looking for lenders and collect their interest rates. Its important to visit as many lenders as you can so as to get a wide range of variety. The more you will search the more variety you will get and thus the chances of getting a good loan deal increase. Another vital factor that you should consider while seeking a low rate loan is the loan term. A low rate loan with a short repayment term would not be a good deal. Instead, look for lenders who are offering low interest rates with short monthly payments and longer repayment term. Low rate loans will be offered to you in both secured and unsecured forms. Take special care when you are taking a secured loan. Every lender will ask for different types of collateral. If you will offer low value collateral, you may not get as much fund as you needed. High value collateral will definitely fetch you more fund. The repayment option also needs a thorough attention from your side. The lender might ask you to repay in a particular way only. First see your situation. Find out which repayment option will suit you the best and then decide and make any commitment. Apart from these you should also find out if the lender is asking for any hidden charges. You should make all this query beforehand only so that after getting the loan you are not burdened by these extra charges. All these points discussed so far needs a lot of researching and consulting numerous lenders. This research is possible only through one source, i.e., internet. Internet provides you a huge detail of hundreds of lenders. There you can go through different lenders and get their varied quotes. Your task becomes easier with this as you do not have to visit lenders personally. This way you can save both your time and money. A low rate interest loan offers you money in a very convenient and stress free manner. You can use this loan to for various purposes such as debt consolidation, as a fund for your business, large purchase or any other purpose.
